Gyro Magnetic Compass System GM9
Gyros — By admin on July 26, 2010 3:54 pmThe GM9 compass system is a proven system – in use in over 24 countries worldwide – which provides highly accurate outputs of true or magnetic heading. The GM9′s accuracy enables it to be used as the primary heading reference in both fixed and rotary winged aircraft. The system uses a modular concept and comprises four main units;
- 1. Compass Computer - Designed to meet ARINC requirements the computer contains all the electronic circuitry, power transformers and an invertor module needed to operate the system.
- 2. Compass Controller - Fitted in the console this unit contains the controls and indicators the pilot requires in order to achieve heading information.
- 3. Magnetic Detector Unit (Type F) - The Magnetic Detector Unit senses the heading of the local magnetic field. It was specially developed for helicopter and military use.
- 4. CL11 Directional Gyro - This high performance azimuth gyro is extensively proven in military and civil use. It is a two degree of freedom gyro with a drift rate of less than 1′ per hour. It maintains system accuracy during aircraft turns and heading reference in DG mode.
Features
The high accuracy of the GM9 system is enhanced by the following features:
- Roll cut out; To reduce errors during a turn, magnetic slaving is automatically cut-out at a pre-determined bank angle.
- Power supply variation compensation; The use of a stabalised power supply isolates the flux valve from the aircraft supply variations and reduces errors due to this by a factor of 10.
- Automatic gain control; Variations in the strength of the Earth’s magnetic field change the slaving characteristics of the system and hence the accuracy. Auto gain control compensates for this and allows operation at high latitudes.
- Transmission of heading; Four high accuracy transmission synchros are fitted.
When combined with a doppler system navigational accuracy is better than 1% of distance flown. Service experience has proven that the GM9 is a reliable system under severe military conditions.
The GM9 System
- Recommended overhaul period is 3000 flying hours.
- Confirms to ARINC 306.
- Complies with MIL-L-85762A Class A, NVIS Green A.
- Meets requirements of BS3G100, BS2011.
